A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
In the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Day, the three girls go out after work and one girl says, “This is THE watering hole for the upwardly mobile…” In other words, this is where career people, who are on their way up in life, do their meeting and greeting. The concept of being “upwardly mobile” is a hot topic for many. Even those in poor countries yearn to be lifted up and out and on to better things, and nothing’s changed since the first century AD.
The city of Colossae was home to the upwardly mobile of the Roman Empire. Now it’s bury under grass and dirt somewhere in south-eastern Turkey. The power struggle for more can lead to losing friends. It breaks down family units. It’s a pull against a God-presence in everyday life, and it causes people to die young. [v5-9] So Paul starts today’s chapter with two powerful words: “If then…” If it’s at all real, if everything that we’ve been looking at in these Breadcrumbs for the last three months means anything at all to you, then…
“…set your minds on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Keep seeking things above, not things that are on earth. For the old you has died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.” [v2-4]
Everything else in today’s chapter stems from a basic mind-set of being upwardly mobile in HIM.

3. Admit: “…Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us…”
When the skies over my life are shut up and there’s no rain because I’ve sinned against You, and when I pray towards Your dwelling place and give praise to Your Name and turn from my sin because You’ve afflicted me, then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your servant. Teach me the right way to live, and rain over my life that You gave for my inheritance. [2 Chronicles 6:26-27]
4. Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one…”
Father God, help me never to turn a deaf ear to Your instruction. If I do, then even my prayers are detestable to You. [Proverbs 28:9]
