17 May: The World’s Best Chick Flick

When Life yields little Good News, today’s chapter is a scene from the greatest play ever written. If made for movie, it would have my vote for making the world’s best chick flick…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Unlike some, I can re-watch movies time and again. I have several easy-watching “chick flicks” that don’t require brain-power and I watch them just to wind down. But like a Shakespearean play, there can be several things in today’s chapter that can be missed when it’s left in writing. Written 3,200+ years ago, the Book of Ruth is one that both men and woman today can learn from. In that culture, for example, Naomi could be selfish and keep Ruth as her life-long servant. [v1] Ruth could have ditched Naomi and ran after the young men [v10], as soon as she was accepted into the community.[a]  Boaz could have taken sexual advantage of Ruth’s presence on the threshing floor. She was clearly out of place there that night [v14], and everyone would have blamed her, if she cried “rape”. Instead Boaz shows integrity [v11-13] and protects both Ruth and Naomi, by starting a union with them both in the proper way before God.

So today’s chapter has several layers of information that may be missed while it’s not performed as a play, or filmed as a Hollywood love story. While the layer of a love story is clear, it seems that the theme for world’s best chick flick is that love isn’t self-seeking. Everyone in the story is watching out for the next person…
