28 June: Leading by Example

One of our biggest disappointments will come when leaders don’t do what they’re asking us to do. Conversely, our greatest boost to mobilise, is often ignited by experiencing Leadership by Example.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

In the past, I would have described myself as someone who wasn’t bothered about money. That was until a very kind distant relative named me in his Will. After giving appropriate thought to the life of a careful and thoughtful man now lost (though I expect much less time given to the subject that His Maker would expect from me), greed set in. It was as if my hand gripped a wad of bank notes that were now glowing with fire in my tightly clenched fist. Why is it that money is the root of all kinds of evil?[a] It seems to be the last thing we want to give freely to our most generous Father God whose loving-kindness to us has been demonstrated time out of mind.

Speaking of the Creator God, King David of Israel once said: “…Your loving-kindness is better than life…”[b] He then finished his life by emptying his pockets in today’s chapter, of everything that he couldn’t keep. [v3-5] Having led by example, King David’s national leaders followed suit. [v6-8] When the general population saw their leaders leading by example, they rejoiced greatly. [v9] I want to lead first in my own life, then those I influence, by opening my hands to my Maker – just as He so kindly has opened His Hand to me. I want to lead by example by allowing my Father God to take what He needs whenever He needs it.

   1.   Praise: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”

Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices to You, Lord! Let the settlements rejoice. Let all the people sing for joy and shout from the mountaintops. May they give glory to You, Lord, and proclaim Your praise in the islands! [Isaiah 42:11-12]

   2.   Ask: “…Give us today our daily bread…”

When anxiety was great within me, Father God, Your consolation brought me joy. [Psalm 94:19]

While checking my thoughts, words and deeds today, Lord, help me to remember that Love is patient and kind. It doesn’t envy, it doesn’t boast, and it’s not proud. [1 Corinthians 13:4]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”

Thank-you Lord that Your wisdom is a shelter – just as money is a shelter – but the advantage of knowledge is this: Your wisdom preserves those who have it. [Proverbs 7:12]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”
