17 September: Shipwrecked!

Shipwrecked on the edge of the Adriatic…  what a start to an autumn day!

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Having survived a shipwrecked off the southern tip of South America (I wrote about this in my second book Mysterious? …Expect the Unexpected…), I’ve noticed how most of us today don’t want bad news. We brace ourselves against bad news and stories like the one in today’s chapter, because we prefer to believe that our Creator God is “good”. After all, who would follow a God who has both the foreknowledge and the ability to stop bad things from happening, but doesn’t!!

Weirdly enough though, it seems to me that the “Besuras HaGeulah to you (the message/report/tidings of the beginning of redemption/atonement) of great simcha (joy)” i.e. the Good News of great joy[a], is really only “truly good” when I’m sitting on solid ground after a shipwreck! My Maker demonstrates Himself to me in a real way as I watch those floating pieces out there on the waves of my life.  Those broken bits could have been me!  Instead, my Father God saved me just as He did Paul: in just the right way at just the right time. It’s only as my senses are heighted (by experiencing the good, the bad, and the truly ugly) that I can finally see my Creator’s idea of “good”. I can finally see who I really am, in light of who He really is…

  1. Praise: “Our Father in Heaven, how great is Your name! Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven…”
I’ll thank and praise You today, Lord, for You are great and most worthy of praise! You’re to be feared above all gods. [1 Chronicles 16:25]

Thank-you Lord for your great promises: that I’ll have plenty to eat, until I’m full. I’ll praise the Name of the Lord my God, who has worked wonders for me. Never again will Your people be shamed. [Joel 2:26]
  1. Admit: “…Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us…”
Help me each day, Father God, to be devoted to others in love – honouring others above myself. [Romans 12:10]
  1. Protect: “… Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one…”
I thank and praise You, God of my ancestors: You’ve given me wisdom and power, You’ve made known to me what I’ve asked of You. [Daniel 2:23]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory for ever and ever. Amen!”
