11 January: Define “Righteousness”

The first record that the word “righteous” was used in relation to a human, was when the Creator God said it of Noah.[a] Today’s chapter shows how to get “righteousness”…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

This chapter gives us a vital clue on another important puzzle piece that we should pocket away. It’s the thing that humans have tried to construct and reconstruct in every religious system since the beginning. It’s the moment when the Creator God defined “righteousness” within an exchange. Abraham did something – he “believed the Lord”; and the Lord did something in return – “it was reckoned to him (credited to him or bestowed on him) as righteousness”. [v6]

The Creator and Possessor of Heaven and Earth[a] took Abraham firmly in hand to demonstrate to the world what it looks like to have a relationship based on trust. Righteousness is a gift from our Maker that comes to us from outside ourselves. It’s the result of a certain type of “believing”. Abraham doesn’t understand all the ins and outs of how these extraordinary promises could possibly come true, but he still trusts that his extraordinary God is fully able to do anything that He said He’ll do.

THE LORD’S PRAYER:

   1.   Praise: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”

Because You, Lord, have commanded Your loving-kindness in the daytime, Your song will be with me in the night – a prayer to the God of who give me life. [Psalm 42:8]

   2.  Ask: “…Give us today our daily bread…”

  • Yourself: Deeper love for fellow Believers
  • Your concerns for today
Answer me, O Lord. Answer me so that these people may know that You, Lord, are God, and that You’ve turned their heart back to You again. [1 Kings 18:37]

   3.   Admit: “…Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us…”

Lord, You poured Yourself out even to death. You were numbered with the transgressors and bore the sin of many. But You did this to interceded for the transgressors. Thank You! [Isaiah 53:12]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.”

I trust You, Lord, that the Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. [Romans 8:16]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”
