26 February: Spiritual Euthanasia

When it comes to avoiding pain or the adverse effects of decline, people in some circles have suggested a free choice between life and death. But today’s chapter offers a painless solution for our greatest incurable disease: “sin”.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

If our newspapers aren’t full of horror stories, our history books show the harshness of life on Planet Earth. Now, with the rise in incurable degenerative disease, some may wonder what “painless solutions” could be pursued with our free choice. While not ignoring the shocking realities of life, I wonder how many people have fully unpacked their current belief system that believes, or assumes, that we simply “cease” to exist if we die.

Today’s chapter brings in the Lord the Giver of Life into the picture; and with Him, His Eternal Life. This must be added to our free choices. That true, it isn’t difficult for me to reach out and take hold of what my Maker is offering. [v11-13] Apparently, my capacity for ‘taking it in’ is part of my makeup and original design: its already in my mouth and heart. [v14] So, looking out my window today to contemplate the harsh past, the turbulent present, and unforeseen future, I can see that the Creator God has set before me the choice today: life and prosperity, or death and adversity [v15] – and why?… So that I would LIVE. [v16] By not choosing LIFE[a], would be like a form of “spiritual suicide” by default, simply because I’ve chosen to reject Him who is the source of LIFE. [v19-20]

   3.   Admit: “…Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us…”

If I’m strong, Father God, then I ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please myself. Help me to please my neighbour for their good, and to build them up. [Romans 15:1-2]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”

Vindicate me, Lord, for I’ve led a blameless life. I’ve trusted in You Lord, and haven’t faltered. [Psalm 26:1]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”
