A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Towards the end of 2013, we had the privilege of going to Qatar. We happened to arrive on the week-end of the greatest festival in the Muslim calendar – Eid, in memory of today’s story and, most especially, how God Himself provided the lamb. Eid is the most important of all celebrations right across the Muslim world and so it should be. It’s the catalytic moment when the Creator God weaves into His story the greatest clue yet: how He can “bless all nations on earth” through the seed or offspring of this one man. [v18]

Giving up Your Only Son
Giving up Your Only Son

The phrase “your son, your only son, whom you love” [v2] isn’t repeated again in two millenniums of storyline: until the day when Jesus was baptised: “…and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, ‘This is My beloved Son, (My Son, the Beloved) in whom I am well-pleased.’”[a]  As a parent, the ultimate sacrifice that you could make would be to hand over your only son whom they love, in him you are well please. Yet on this same mountain (Mt Moriah) the One who is called Immanuel: God with Us[b] became that one perfect sacrifice: “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”.[c]  Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord it will be provided.” [v14]

THE LORD’S PRAYER:

   1.   Praise: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”

My heart exults in You Lord! My inner strength is boosted in the Lord. Because I rejoice in Your salvation, my mouth speaks boldly against my enemies. [1 Samuel 2:1]

   2.   Ask: “…Give us today our daily bread…”

  • Your concerns for today
Father God hear in heaven our prayer and the supplication of Your people, and maintain our cause. [1 Kings 8:45]

   3.   Admit: “…Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us…”

Lord, pardon, I pray, the iniquity of Your people according to the greatness of Your loving-kindness, just as You also have forgiven Your people, from the days of Egypt even until now. [Numbers 14:19]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.”

Who am I, Lord God, and who is my family that You’ve brought me this far by Your grace? Blessed are You, O Lord my father, forever and ever. [1 Chronicles 17:16 and 29:10]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”
