A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
In today’s culture, things have become incredibly hazy when it comes to the concept of a loving God or, more conveniently, a forgiving God. So, what stood out for me today was the closing words in this chapter:
“But the thing David had done was evil in the sight of the Lord.” [v27]
Behind those words is the “roused displeasure” of the One who’s hands had flung stars into space. “Displeasure” to Him who created stars like Canis Marjoris could mean “total annihilation” for us! When a King did things wrong, like King David in today’s chapter, their example affected many. This is why we hear of the sin of leaders today. God isn’t allowing them to wait until “Judgement Day”. They are exposed and disciplined immediately and often publicly.
The fact that my Maker is “The Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness”[a], simply buys me time. In that time, I have a choice. I can contrive a perfect cover-up, or else I can take up my Creator God’s offer of forgiveness after a 180 degree life-style change called “repentance” i.e. own up to my mistakes, make amends for what I’ve done, and then correct my life course – just as Isaiah the prophet once said: “make straight paths for Him”.[b] The fantastic news is that all this can be done before I have to “meet my Maker”! Cleanse me with hyssop, Father God, and I will be clean; wash me, and I’ll be whiter than snow. Hide Your face from my sins, Lord, and blot out all my iniquity. [Psalm 51:7&9]
4. Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.”
In You, Lord, a whole structure is being fitted together and growing into an organic holy temple. And in You Lord, I’m also are being built together with Your people into a dwelling of God’s Holy Spirit. [Ephesians 2:21-22]
