03 May: Crossing Into a Better Life

Many of us have lived through dry, barren, “wilderness experiences”, and today’s chapter holds a clue for entering into our destiny – the place prepared in advance for us to go…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

In answer to the question: “If you had one wish that the Creator God could do for you today, what would it be?”, I would guess that most of us would want to be in the best possible place. A place where we were designed to be, enjoying a life experience of “blessing” – presumably prosperity and success.[a] Or, the icing on the cake, in “a land flowing with milk and honey”.[b] But there’s a vital clue hidden in the narrative of our Maker’s Guidebook for LIFE that many of us would miss, if it weren’t pointed out…

“And Yehoshua said unto HaAm (the people), Set yourselves apart as kodesh (sacred/sacredness); for tomorrow Hashem (The Name, The LORD) will do nifla’ot (wonders, marvellous works, miracles, wonderful works, wondrous things) among you.” [v5]

I want a free gift from my Maker – the gift of crossing into a better life.[c]  But in a world where egoism and individualism are foundational ethical systems, I can’t imagine any good father anywhere who would give his kids everything he had planned to give them (and worked hard to sacrificially provide), when they are only willing to accept it from him if it includes their will, their way, and in their own time. So, in today’s chapter, a “golden thread” is found. It appears in the fabric of the Creator God’s epic storyline from beginning to end: I need to do something first. More than likely, this is before I can get to the place where my Maker was prepared in advance for me to go. If I’m to cross into a better life, I need to consecrate myself  (set myself apart as “sacred” i.e. in this current culture and mindset, choose a lifestyle set for “sacredness”); or, in slightly easier English: “repent”, as the later writers put it.[d] By making a 180 degree U-Turn away from my defective thinking, faulty words, and flawed behaviour, I can finally tap into anything that my Holy God and Maker has got ready for me to receive.[e]
