22 January: Quick Judgements

If you struggle to know the choice to make at strategic points along your life-path, today’s chapter shows how important it is not to make quick judgements, or make a move in any direction, without the full story…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

When things go wrong in my life (or not according to my plans), I don’t want to make quick judgements, or retaliate in the confusion of how things are playing out. Instead, I want to go back to the last “signpost” that I had from my Maker, then trust Him for His bigger picture.

Living with Confusion

Looking at today’s chapter, I can’t help but notice the story behind the story. With the benefit now of hindsight, I could tell Joseph that his brothers had changed, and that the Creator of the script had done all this for the future of a nation.[a]  How we could all do with hindsight! But Joseph’s behaviour remains an example even for us today and two things are helpful to apply to my next crisis. First, Joseph remembered what his God had said in the past. [v9]  Then, instead of making a move based of quick judgements, he gave it three days – so that he could pick his way carefully through a personal minefield, as his life-storm continues. THE LORD’S PRAYER:

   1.   Praise: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”

You wrap Yourself in light, as with a garment, Lord God. You stretch out the heavens like a tent and lay the beams of Your upper chambers on their waters. You make the clouds Your chariot to ride on the wings of the wind!  [Psalm 104:2-3]

   2.   Ask: “…Give us today our daily bread…”

You, O God, are far from the wicked, but You hear the prayers of the righteous. [Proverbs 15:29]

   3.   Admit: “…Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us…”

As I make my daily choices, Father God, help me to remember that the wages of sin is death, but Your free gift is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. [Romans 6:23]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.”

Thank-you for bringing me out from under the yoke of slavery, Lord. You’ve redeemed me with Your outstretched Arm, and with mighty acts of judgment. [Exodus 6:6]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”
