21 September: Floating the Titanic

The sinking of the unsinkable ship in 1912, seems to be one tragedy that won’t disappear from living memory. But what if we’re sailing headlong into disaster and aren’t aware of it…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

One epic movie of recent times, has to be Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. The tragic romance, the unforgettable music, and the event forever etched now in infamy, combine to give the fate of this unsinkable ship an almost eternal quality.

Today’s chapter, written in the 1st century AD to people living in Rome, for example, shows all of humanity “in the same boat”. If this world was the RMS Titanic – we’re all sinking! It’s a mathematical certainly: there’s no-one “righteous”, not even one. [v10] And yet, what catches my attention today, are the words: “…But now…” [v21] Just two little words, yet SO brilliant! In all the world, then and now, only one God has ever offered to ‘justify by faith’ anyone from every nationality. [v30] Justified, just as if I’d never sinned. In doing this, my Maker hasn’t abolished His own Law, nor His prophets. Instead, He’s fulfilled them.[a] The real miracle is in the lengths that He’s gone to, in “refloating our Titanic”. How deep and how wide is His love for us…[b]

THE LORD’S PRAYER:

   1.   Praise: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”

My heart, O God, is steadfast for You. I want to sing and make music today, with all my soul! [Psalm 108:1]

   2.   Ask: “…Give us today our daily bread…”

  • The World: God’s GRACE on Nigeria[d]
  • Your Country: Poverty caused by Credit Card Debt
  • Yourself: Desire to “covert” what you don’t have
  • Your concerns for today
May You answer the prayers of those who ask, Lord, so that those who don’t know You might glorify You for Your mercy – as it is written: “Therefore I will praise You among all nationalities; I’ll sing the praises of Your name.” [Romans 15:9]

   3.   Admit: “…Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us…”

Help me to remember, Father God, that I don’t have to be afraid when I come to You, having done all this evil. All You want is that I don’t turn away from You, but that I serve You, Lord, with all my heart. [1 Samuel 12:20]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.”

Thank-You God that You’ve given Your people a strong dwelling place. You make salvation its walls and ramparts. [Isaiah 26:1]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”
