14 March: Choosing Your Team

Today’s chapter shows that, when it comes to Eternity, we’re not in charge of choosing who’s on the team…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Back in the 90s, Mark and I heard Canon J.John speak on “Healing Shattered Confidence”.[a] In his talk, he described a scene from a PE lesson at school where your teacher chooses two leaders to captain two teams. As your classmates are chosen by the team captains one-by-one, you’re standing there praying that you’ll not be the last picked. But you are last! And the conversation between the two leaders begins like this…

When will you ever be good enough, Charlie Brown?!
When will you ever be good enough, Charlie Brown?!

“You have her!”

“I don’t want her, you take her.”

“I had her last time! You have her!”

Sitting there transfixed in that auditorium that night, I vividly remembered just that sort of scene so often from my own school days.

But what’s incredible as I look at today’s chapter and recall that gaudy, insecure, ugly little face, is that – in that very state – I was picked for the greatest team ever. I was chosen by the Son[b]: “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son …and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him...” [v27]

THE LORD’S PRAYER:

   1.   Praise: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”

I will sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted. The Creator God is a warrior and the Lord is Your name. [Exodus 15:1a,3]

   2.   Ask: “…Give us today our daily bread…”

  • The World: Pray for God’s Grace on Botswana[d]
  • Your Country: Needs of your work and school friends
  • Yourself: The Lord’s leading in your life
  • Your concerns for today
Thank-you God that You make me lie down in green pastures; You lead me beside quiet waters, and You refresh my soul. Thank-you that You guide me along the right path for Your name’s sake. [Psalm 23:2-3]

   3.   Admit: “…Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us…”

Father, help me to know that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in me, whom I’ve received from You. I’m not my own person – I’ve been bought at a price. Therefore I should honour God today, with my whole being – including my body. [1 Corinthians 6:19-20]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.”

Ask about the former days, the days long before your time, from the day God created humanity on earth; inquire from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this story, plan and message ever happened? Has anything like it ever been heard of? [Deuteronomy 4:32]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”
