12 March: Gluten Free

Today’s chapter made me wonder if less is expected of me than more…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Laura’s gluten intolerant friend came to stay with us and I realised that there’s a vast array of lovely stuff out there, which has to be cut from your diet, if you’re to be gluten free. I expect that few people would give a thought to the actual wheat in fields. But afterwards, it’s incredible just how much can be either made with wheat, or else it needs wheat product to make the recipe work or taste nice. So reading today’s chapter made me wonder just how upside-down I continue to be in my thinking.

The Unrefined Basis for a Complex Future

The Unrefined Basis for our Complex Future

In a series of parables, Jesus uses wheat to explain who I am in Him. This tells me what my Maker expects from me i.e. what my purpose is now and what my purpose will be in the future. Using the seed of my DNA, imagine if my only job in this life was to ensure that I take root in good soil. [v1-20]  It doesn’t matter whether I’m asleep or awake because, by itself, the soil produces grain. [v26-29]

In many ways, our life packages today are now filled with a sort of undigested gluten, clogging up what our Maker originally planned for us. I need to start cutting from my “life expectation diet” to be more spiritually gluten free. That is to say, I am today the unrefined basis of my complex future. All that the Creator God needs is the smallest of seeds that trusts fully in His power to make His Harvest Plan for me, work as it should. [v30-41]

THE LORD’S PRAYER:

   1.   Praise: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”

I’ve seen Your power and Your glory at work in Your dwelling place. Your love is better than life and, because of that, my lips will glorify You. I’ll praise You as long as I live, and in Your name, Lord, will I lift up my hands. [Psalm 63:2-4]

   2.   Ask: “…Give us today our daily bread…”

Thank-you, Lord, for Your ancient words: “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet Your unfailing love for me will not be shaken nor Your covenant of peace be removed…” You have compassion on me because You know what I’m made of. [Isaiah 54:10]

   3.   Admit: “…Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us…”

Lord I repent of my part in cultivating wickedness. I pray to You, Lord, in the hope that You may forgive me for having such thoughts even in my heart. [Acts 8:22]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.”

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. [Exodus 14:14]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”
