06 September: Choosing Words Wisely

I’ve experienced a bumpy road in life, especially after not choosing my words wisely! Now in my 5th decade, I’m hoping to “iron out the kinks” by learning from the people in today’s chapter…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

I haven’t read Dale Carnegie’s book How to Win Friends and Influence People. I seem to have learnt my lesson on choosing words wisely, by going about it the hard way. One pet gripe that my oldest daughter has against me is that, I need to listen and think before I draw my conclusions. And so I’m reminded again today, to watch what I say before I say it. In every area where new things come my way, I need to be quick to listen, slow to speak and (most especially), slow to become angry.[a]

So, looking at how the people made jokes about what was happening on the streets of Jerusalem, in today’s chapter, the reflex reaction was either to joke it off, or fall back on natural reasons for supernatural events. [v13,15] After a supernatural encounter with the Creator God’s Holy Spirit, those looking on accused Jesus’ friends of being drunk at 9am in the morning! However, what our Maker is trying to introduce, using all the languages present so that no-one would miss out [v5-12], is that He’s Immanuel: God with us, and God for us – Father, Son and Holy Spirit…

THE LORD’S PRAYER:

   1.   Praise: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. Your Kingdom come! Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven …”

I want to sing praise to You, Lord, along with Your godly ones, and give thanks to Your Holy Name! [Psalm 30:4]

   2.   Ask: “…Give us today our daily bread…”

  • The World: Pray for God’s GRACE on Morocco[c]
  • Your Country’s response to illegal immigrants
  • Yourself: A ‘Christ-like’ attitude[d] in thought, word and deed
  • Your concerns for today
When I battle through this life, on whatever way You send me, and if I pray to You, Lord –  towards Your dwelling place – please hear in heaven my prayer and supplication, Father God, and maintain my cause. [1 Kings 8:44-45]

   3.   Admit: “…Forgive us our sin as we forgive those who sin against us…”

I want to stick close to Your Word every day, Father God, so that You can help me to discern what is best, that I may be pure and blameless for the Day of Your Coming. [Philippians 1:10]

   4.   Protect: “…Lead us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.”

As I go about my daily choices, Lord, help me to remember that wisdom is a protection, and the advantage of knowledge is that Wisdom preserves those who have it. [Ecclesiastes 7:12]

“For Yours Lord is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory now and forever. Amen!”

When questioned, tested, tricked or in His hour of great need, Jesus spoke what was previously written in God’s Word.[e] So, the final section on this page is about memorizing the script through 10 topics.
