05 November: Averting Terror

Today’s the day when Britons (and others in the Commonwealth) remember the first terrorist attack on London…

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

In a post 9/11 world, where terrorism isn’t something to enjoy, it’s not difficult to imagine how, with 30 barrels of gun powder, Guy Fawkes could have got away with his plot to bring down the Houses of Parliament on November 5th, 1605. We know that such events have and can happen and yet, oddly enough, we still presume that a sudden and unexpected change to life as we know it, won’t ever happen to us. We’re somehow immune! Or else, the idea of a history-changing event is shelved at the back of our minds and only allowed time in the news.

Paul, a 1st Century Jewish teacher, closed his first letter to Believers in the Roman province of Thessalonica, with a reminder about a future world-changing event. It would be an event that will come suddenly, and nothing will ever be the same again. [v1-11]  But instead of shelving this as Sci-Fi, or something that’ll happen well after our lifetimes, Paul gives his readers twelve things to put “up front and centre” in the meantime. [v12-22]  We may be unsuccessful in averting terror, but as the celebrations of yet another Guy Fawkes Night pass me by, I’m reminded to be joyful, pray continually, and give thanks for what I have. [v16-18]
